🎓

Attention Students - You CAN Vote Here!

If you live in Kingston during the school year, you are eligible to vote in the municipal election here - even if you're registered to vote back home. Under Ontario's Municipal Elections Act, post-secondary students are considered non-resident voters, meaning you can vote in both your home community and Kingston.

📱 5 minutes online

Vote from your phone or laptop. Online voting is open Oct 14–26. No travel, no line-ups.

🏠 Your rent = your taxes

City Hall decisions directly affect your housing, streets, and transit. You deserve a say.

🗳️ Students make up 60% of Sydenham

Yet fewer than 10% vote. A small increase in student turnout can change the outcome.

Can't Vote in Person?

Proxy Voting

If you can't vote in person for any reason, you can ask someone you trust to vote on your behalf. This person is called your voting proxy.

📝

How It Works

  • Download and fill out two copies of the Voting Proxy Form (Form 3) - you and your proxy each need one
  • Your proxy takes both copies to City Hall (216 Ontario Street) during regular hours, or to the voting place before 5 PM on Election Day
  • Your proxy must show ID when submitting the form
  • You can't appoint a proxy until after August 21, 2026

📌

Rules to Know

  • You can only assign one proxy
  • Your proxy must be eligible to vote in the election
  • One person can only be a proxy for one non-family member
  • A family member (parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild) can proxy for multiple family members
  • The form witness cannot be the same person as your proxy

Students living in Kingston who can't vote in person can also use a proxy.

I'm a student. Can I vote here AND in my hometown? ▾

Yes. If you or your spouse own or rent property in Kingston (even if you live somewhere else), you qualify as a non-resident elector and can vote here. Note: the property must be in your name (or your spouse's name) - properties owned by a business or trust don't qualify.

What's the limit on campaign contributions? ▾
You can contribute up to $1,200 to any one candidate, and no more than $5,000 total to all candidates running for the same council.
